Lifecycle status

PowerFlex 70 (20A) lifecycle status: what Rockwell says and what to do

Rockwell Automation is ending sales of the PowerFlex 70. Some catalog numbers are already discontinued, others are End of Life with dates in 2026 and 2027, and Rockwell's family notice and its catalog-number pages don't always agree. Here is exactly what each says, and what to do with the drives in your plant.

By Kunj Tapiawala, KIV Parts · Published · 7 min read

The Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 70 is a compact AC drive with catalog numbers starting 20A: 20AB for 240 V, 20AC for 400 V and 20AD for 480 V models, followed by the rating and a long string of option codes for the enclosure, keypad, filter, brake and communication. Because every option is part of the catalog number, the status can differ between two drives of the same rating. This page lists what Rockwell Automation itself says – nothing from distributor lists.

Key takeaways

  • Rockwell's PowerFlex 70 page says the drive will be discontinued as of September 30, 2026, for the IP20/NEMA 1, IP54/NEMA 12 and flange versions, and that NEMA 4X versions stay Active Mature.
  • The catalog-number pages we checked show some drives already Discontinued on June 1, 2023 and others End of Life with dates from December 1, 2026 to July 1, 2027.
  • Three IP66/NEMA 4X/12 wall-mount drives we checked show End of Life, not Active Mature – so check your exact catalog number.
  • Rockwell recommends the PowerFlex 750 family; plan the change machine by machine and keep like-for-like spares until then.

What Rockwell's own pages say

Rockwell's PowerFlex 70 family page announces that the drive

“will be discontinued and no longer available for sale as of September 30, 2026”

– Rockwell Automation, PowerFlex 70 (Rockwell Automation product family page), checked September 29, 2026

It adds that this End of Life status and date apply only to the IP20/NEMA Type 1, IP54/NEMA Type 12 and flange versions, and that the NEMA 4X versions remain Active Mature.

The individual product pages tell a more detailed story. We opened Rockwell's page for each catalog number in the tables below on September 29, 2026. Eleven of them show Discontinued as of June 1, 2023. The other nine show End of Life, with discontinued dates of December 1, 2026, May 30, 2027 or July 1, 2027 – none of them the family date of September 30, 2026. And the three wall-mount drives whose Rockwell description reads IP66/NEMA Type 4X/12 (20AB4P2C3AYNNNC0, 20AB4P2C3AYNANC0 and 20AD3P4C3AYNNNC0) show End of Life with July 1, 2027, where the family page would lead you to expect Active Mature.

We report both as published. The page for your exact catalog number is the more specific source, but if a date drives a buying decision, confirm it with Rockwell or your distributor first. In Rockwell's lifecycle terms, an End of Life product can generally still be ordered until its discontinued date. Our lifecycle status guide explains each status.

Status by catalog number

Rockwell's PowerFlex 70 catalog numbers are configured strings, and only some of them have a product page, so a drive with the same rating but different options can have a different status from the rows above. If yours isn't listed, look it up on Rockwell's product lifecycle search.

Sources: every status, date and replacement on this page comes from Rockwell Automation's own product page for that catalog number (the “Rockwell” links in the Source column), read on September 29, 2026. Statuses change: before you buy or plan a migration, check the current status on Rockwell's product lifecycle search.

Rockwell's migration path

Rockwell's PowerFlex 70 page recommends modernizing to the PowerFlex 750 family of AC drives. The catalog-number pages we checked give a replacement category but don't name a replacement catalog number, so the new drive has to be chosen for the job: its voltage, the motor's full-load current and the duty (normal or heavy), the enclosure the location needs, and the network and I/O the machine uses.

Treat the change as an engineering job, not a swap. Mounting, power and control wiring and parameters all differ between drive families, so map each setting by function rather than by parameter number and check the start, stop, speed reference and safety wiring before the first run. Our VFD basics guide and motor and VFD sizing guide cover the groundwork.

What to do now

  1. List every PowerFlex 70 you run with the full catalog number and series from the nameplate, the motor it drives and what the machine costs you per hour down.
  2. Look up each catalog number in the tables or on Rockwell's site, and note whether it is Discontinued or End of Life and the date.
  3. For End of Life drives, decide on a last-time buy before the date on that catalog number's page. For discontinued ones, spares have to come from surplus or repair.
  4. Save the parameters from each drive while it still runs. Our VFD quote page takes single drives; a list goes through our ISO list form and gets an official written quote in under 24 hours on business days.
  5. Store spare drives properly. Drives kept unpowered for a long time may need their capacitors reformed before use; follow Rockwell's guidance for your drive.

Safety first: a drive's DC bus capacitors can hold a dangerous charge after power is removed. Follow your site's lockout/tagout procedure, wait the time given on the drive's label and verify zero voltage with a properly rated meter before touching the terminals.

PowerFlex 70 drives in our stock

Surplus and used drives are the way to get an identical PowerFlex 70 once a catalog number is discontinued. Each catalog number in the tables links to a live search of our store; you can also browse PowerFlex 70 results or all AC drives. Every item we stock is photographed, so read the full catalog number and series on the nameplate before you buy.

Replacing several at once, or need a rating we don't have? Send the catalog numbers through the obsolete parts quote page and we'll check our shelves and our sourcing network. Purchase orders are welcome; payment is due before we ship.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PowerFlex 70 discontinued?

Partly, and the rest is on the way. Rockwell's PowerFlex 70 page says the drive will be discontinued as of September 30, 2026, for the IP20/NEMA 1, IP54/NEMA 12 and flange versions. On the catalog-number pages we checked, some drives were already Discontinued on June 1, 2023 and others were End of Life with dates between December 1, 2026 and July 1, 2027.

Why do the PowerFlex 70 dates differ?

Rockwell's family notice and its catalog-number pages give different dates, and the family page says NEMA 4X versions stay Active Mature while the IP66/NEMA 4X/12 wall-mount drives we checked show End of Life. The page for your exact catalog number is the more specific one; confirm with Rockwell before you rely on a date.

What replaces a PowerFlex 70?

Rockwell's PowerFlex 70 page recommends the PowerFlex 750 family of AC drives. The catalog-number pages we checked don't name a replacement catalog number, so size the new drive from the motor nameplate and the application, and plan for mounting, wiring and parameter changes.

Can I still buy a PowerFlex 70?

In Rockwell's lifecycle terms, an End of Life catalog number can generally still be ordered until its discontinued date; a Discontinued one can't be bought new. Surplus and used drives are the other source. Match the full catalog number, since the enclosure, keypad and options are part of it.

Need a PowerFlex 70 spare?

Send the catalog number from the nameplate – one drive or a whole list – and we'll check our shelves and our sourcing network and quote it in writing.
