PowerFlex 4 and PowerFlex 40 (22A / 22B) lifecycle status: what Rockwell says and what to do

Rockwell Automation lists the PowerFlex 4 and PowerFlex 40 compact drives as discontinued. Here is the manufacturer's own status, date and named replacement for the common catalog numbers, and a practical plan for the drives still running in your plant.

By Kunj Tapiawala, KIV Parts · Published · 6 min read

The Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 4 (catalog numbers starting 22A) and PowerFlex 40 (22B) are small AC drives found on conveyors, fans, pumps and machine axes everywhere. This page lists what Rockwell Automation itself says about each common catalog number – nothing from distributor lists – so you can decide between a like-for-like spare and a planned move to the newer drive. For the hands-on differences between a PowerFlex 40 and its successor, see our PowerFlex 525 vs PowerFlex 40 guide.

Key takeaways

  • Every PowerFlex 4 (22A) and PowerFlex 40 (22B) catalog number in the tables below is listed as Discontinued on its own Rockwell product page, dated June 30, 2025.
  • Each page names a replacement: a PowerFlex 523 (25A) for a PowerFlex 4 and a PowerFlex 525 (25B) for a PowerFlex 40.
  • Rockwell publishes a migration guide for moving from the PowerFlex 40 and 40P to the PowerFlex 525.
  • The replacement is not a drop-in swap, so keep like-for-like spares for drives you can't rework during an outage.

What Rockwell's own pages say

Rockwell's PowerFlex 4 and 40 family pages don't carry a family-wide statement; the status lives on each catalog number's product page. We opened the page for every drive in the tables below on September 29, 2026. Each one shows Discontinued, with a discontinued date of June 30, 2025. The notice on the 22B-D4P0N104 page, for example, says the drive

“will be discontinued and no longer available for sale”

– Rockwell Automation, 22B-D4P0N104 (Rockwell Automation product page), checked September 29, 2026

In Rockwell's lifecycle terms, Discontinued means the product is no longer made new; repair or exchange services may still be available for a period. Our lifecycle status guide explains each status. If a catalog number isn't in these tables – the PowerFlex 40P (22D) and PowerFlex 4M (22F), for example – we haven't checked it; look it up on Rockwell's product lifecycle search.

Look closely at the replacement column: the replacement's catalog number doesn't always repeat the old rating digits. A 22A-D8P7N104 points to a 25A-D010N104, and a 22B-D012N104 to a 25B-D013N104. Check the replacement's current and power ratings against your motor nameplate before you order.

Sources: every status, date and replacement on this page comes from Rockwell Automation's own product page for that catalog number (the “Rockwell” links in the Source column), read on September 29, 2026. Statuses change: before you buy or plan a migration, check the current status on Rockwell's product lifecycle search.

Rockwell's migration path

For the PowerFlex 40, Rockwell's PowerFlex 40 and 40P Drives to PowerFlex 525 Drives migration guide (publication PFLEX-AP011C, September 2023) walks through the move to the PowerFlex 525. It compares the two drives' ratings, dimensions, fusing, and power and control terminals, shows how common control setups (2-wire, 3-wire, preset speeds) are configured on the 525, and covers network communication. Note that the PowerFlex 525's enable input ships with a factory jumper and the drive has embedded Safe Torque Off, so check how your stop and enable circuits are wired. Our PowerFlex 525 migration steps summarize the practical side.

For the PowerFlex 4, the replacement Rockwell names on each product page is a PowerFlex 523. We did not find a separate Rockwell migration guide for that move, so plan it the same way: compare the mounting and wiring drawings in both user manuals, map every setting by function rather than by parameter number, and confirm the start, stop and speed-reference wiring before the swap.

What to do now

  1. List every PowerFlex 4 and 40 you run with its full catalog number, series and firmware from the nameplate, the motor it drives and what the machine costs you per hour down.
  2. Save the parameters from each drive now, while it still runs. A like-for-like spare with the same settings is a fast swap; without them it's a guessing game.
  3. Buy like-for-like spares for drives on critical machines, especially the ratings you run most. Our VFD quote page takes single drives; a list goes through our ISO list form and gets an official written quote in under 24 hours on business days.
  4. Plan the move to the 523 or 525 machine by machine, at planned shutdowns, starting with the drives you have no spare for.
  5. Store spares properly. Drives kept unpowered for a long time may need their capacitors reformed before use; follow Rockwell's guidance for your drive.

Safety first: a drive's DC bus capacitors can hold a dangerous charge after power is removed. Follow your site's lockout/tagout procedure, wait the time given on the drive's label and verify zero voltage with a properly rated meter before touching the terminals.

PowerFlex drives in our stock

With no new units coming from Rockwell, surplus and used drives are the way to get an identical PowerFlex 4 or 40. Every catalog number in the tables links to a live search of our store, so you see what we have listed right now; you can also browse PowerFlex 4 and PowerFlex 40 results or all AC drives. Every item we stock is photographed, so read the nameplate – catalog number, series and firmware – before you buy.

Can't find the rating you need, or replacing several at once? Send the catalog numbers through the obsolete parts quote page and we'll check our shelves and our sourcing network. Purchase orders are welcome; payment is due before we ship.

Frequently asked questions

Are the PowerFlex 4 and PowerFlex 40 discontinued?

Yes, for every catalog number we checked. Rockwell Automation's product pages list each PowerFlex 4 (22A) and PowerFlex 40 (22B) drive in the table on this page as Discontinued, with a date of June 30, 2025.

What replaces a PowerFlex 4 or a PowerFlex 40?

Each drive's Rockwell product page names a replacement: a PowerFlex 523 (25A) for a PowerFlex 4 and a PowerFlex 525 (25B) for a PowerFlex 40, matched by rating. Rockwell calls them engineering replacements, so plan for mounting, wiring and parameter changes.

Can I still buy a PowerFlex 40?

Not new from Rockwell. Surplus and used drives are the usual source. Match the full catalog number and check the series and firmware on the nameplate in the photos.

Is the PowerFlex 40P covered by this page?

No. The PowerFlex 40P (22D) is a different drive and is not in the table. Look up its catalog number on Rockwell's product lifecycle page.

Need a PowerFlex 4 or 40 spare?

Send the catalog number from the nameplate – one drive or a whole list – and we'll check our shelves and our sourcing network and quote it in writing.
