Why the exact drive is usually the fastest fix

A like-for-like replacement drops into the same mounting holes, lands on the same terminals and takes the same parameter set – often from a saved file or a copied keypad. A different model, even a good successor, means new mounting, rewired control terminals and parameters mapped one by one. So we look for your exact catalog number first, in our AC drives and VFDs and through our sourcing network, and only quote a successor when you ask or when the exact drive cannot be found.

Sizing matters when you do change models. DC drives, soft starters and drive boards

Older machines still run on DC drives and speed controllers, and many pumps, fans and compressors start on soft starters rather than a VFD. When only one board in a drive has failed, a drive power or control board can be the quicker and cheaper repair – send the number printed on the board.

Safety first: a drive's DC bus stays charged after power is removed. Lock out, wait the time on the drive label and verify zero voltage before touching terminals or boards.

What to send for an accurate quote

  • The full catalog number, including voltage and enclosure codes
  • Rated output current and the duty (normal or heavy), not only horsepower
  • Supply voltage and whether the input is single- or three-phase
  • Motor nameplate: HP or kW, full-load amps, voltage and RPM
  • Option cards, keypad and the network the drive is on
  • Firmware version, if the parameter file must load as-is

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a VFD quote from the horsepower alone?

Horsepower is a start, but drives are sized by output current. Send the motor's full-load amps, the supply voltage and whether the load is a fan or pump (normal duty) or a conveyor, mixer or hoist (heavy duty), and we quote a drive that covers it.

My drive is discontinued. Will you quote the newer model?

If you ask, yes. We look for the exact discontinued drive first, because a like-for-like swap keeps the mounting, wiring and parameters. A successor model is quoted as a separate line so you can compare and plan the changes it needs.

Can you quote keypads, option cards or boards on their own?

Yes. Keypads, communication cards, I/O cards and power or control boards are quoted as their own lines. Send the part number printed on the card or board, with a photo if the label is hard to read.

Does a drive need anything after long storage?

It can. The DC bus capacitors in a drive that has been unpowered for a long time may need reforming before full power is applied. Follow the manufacturer's storage guidance for the model you install.
